Kate's Plate is a collection of nutritious recipes, organic meals and snacks. It began because of my total admiration of my friend Kate! We both studied naturopathy together at Southern School of Natural Therapies and have been great friends since.
Kate and her partner Danny now run a very successful and extremely busy landscaping design and garden maintenance service in Melbourne. She is so very organised, and each week Kate plans the meals ahead and will write out the recipes and stick them on the fridge. Most importantly, Kate is a fantastic cook!
At Adelaide Natural Health we love her healthy recipes so much that we have begged her to share her secrets. The philosophy behind all of these recipes is they are made from seasonal fresh ingredients wherever possible which is essential for improving digestion. Recipes by Season
We all have our favourite dish that we could eat any time of year, but it may involve using produce that is grown out of season.
Using seasonal produce is one of the most rewarding ways to cook, for so many reasons.
Firstly, since the produce is fresh we get the most nutritional value from it. Secondly, the taste! Food that has been frozen or preserved has a different flavour. If you need proof of this, try some freshly grown peas as opposed to the frozen variety. Our taste buds suffer for the sake of convenience. Thirdly, seasonal fruit and vegetables are generally much cheaper than non-seasonal because of the abundance and the ease with which they grow in that particular week. Tomatoes in winter cost a lot! Also, by purchasing seasonal and local produce we can dramatically reduce our impact on the only planet we have. There is less processing emissions from packaging, less refrigeration used, less transport costs and it puts more money into your own community. Finally, it keeps you creative! We get to rediscover classic dishes using wonderful ingredients we may otherwise have overlooked if we had purchased out of season produce.
